Gasket maker fail, the tale of the Blue Goo Guru.

Permatex gasket maker gone wrong
Ford 5.0 with incorrect gasket attempt

What you see here is not the result of an amateur, this gasket maker fail was done by someone operating as a business charging people for restoration and performance work. We call people like this a "Blue Goo Guru". This is completely unacceptable even for an amateur who is new to cars and doesn't know what he is doing but for someone operating as a business, this is nearly criminal. This car was sent back to the owner, and he had overheating problems. You can see coolant flow is restricted. Sometimes for imperfect surfaces, a little gasket maker can help make sure you don't have a leak, but it should be used sparingly. You can also see the extreme excess that if it breaks free inside the engine will clog up your oil pump pickup tube and starve the engine of oil.

Too much permatex
Thermostat install gone wrong

You can see the Blue Goo Guru strikes again. Overheating is going to be an issue if you do this. Even though a gasket was used, it seems the installer though half a tube of Permatex was necessary.

Permatex the world
Failed valve cover gasket attempt

The Blue goo guru comes in many colors and here he attempted to seal a valve cover. It might have sealed it but that doesn't mean it was done right.

Put down the gasket maker and step away from the vehicle

This stuff is getting expensive too, especially if you use a whole tube on each valve cover. A tube of Permatex gasket maker is over $11, a set of valve cover gaskets is less than that. Not only does it look terrible, as we discussed before, the extra can end up in your engine clogging oil passages and your oil pickup screen.
