Mustang SVO and 1987-93 Fox Mustang headlight moisture problem, how to fix and help prevent it.

Fixing Mustang headlight moisture problems
Fox Mustang headlight moisture problem

New or old headlights on your Fox Mustang sometimes suffer from moisture collecting in the headlights. Many people experience the notorious Mustang headlight moisture problem. New or original, in both cases it is a breach in the seal or O-ring on the headlight bulb. When it comes to the Bulb being the cause you can help the O-ring seal better with a little grease or Vaseline on the O-ring, if there is an imperfection in the housing where it sits this will help it seal. When it comes to the housing there are a lot of people online saying, "Just drill a hole in the bottom" Well, that lets the water out but doesn't really completely fix the problem and moisture inside the housing will cause the reflective backing to deteriorate over time.

This seems to be a big issue with the reproduction lights on the market and it's caused by the lack of consistent glue where the lens and housing are glued together. An easy way to tackle this is to remove the headlight and get some clear aquarium silicone sealant.

Materials needed:

-masking tape

-clear silicone aquarium sealant

-shop vac

First remove the rubber seal that clips on the light. Use some masking tape to run just outside of the edges where the lens and housing meet, then take your finger and spread the silicone along that seam all the way around the light housing. Then take your shop vac and of course with the bulb removed, place the shop vac on the headlight bulb opening for just a second, long enough to create a vacuum inside the headlight housing. This will pull in the silicone into any void that is allowing the moisture in. You can then afterwards go back around the edge with a little silicone to reinforce that it's sealed. You can then remove your tape (the purpose of the tape was to make sure you had a nice, neat line instead of a messy smear. Let it dry and reinstall. Most of the time this will fix your issue.

I strongly recommend doing this with any new light you buy for your Mustang before you install them but especially on the reproduction ones. The quality of the Chinese reproductions just isn't the same as OE. There is also a lighting pattern issue with the Chinese reproductions but that's another topic.
